MDCB-2v2 : MIDI / Juno-60 Interface

SPECIFICATION ^^^^^

MDCB-2 ver. 2 enables Roland Juno-60 synthesizer to be connected to MIDI systems. With help of it, you can remotely control keyboard of instrument and its VCF and arpeggiator by MIDI commands. Hold and Patch Shift functions can be controlled via MIDI too. MDCB-2 ver. 2 enhances DCO functions - Chord mode can be chosen which is not accessible by any other method. The instrument then works like polyphonic MIDI sound expander.

  1. Input of MIDI bus
  2. Output of MIDI bus
  3. Parameters selector
  4. MIDI activity indication
  5. Power-on indication
  6. Reset button
  7. Power supply adapter
  8. Output CV for Juno-60 VCF
  9. Output for Juno-60 HOLD
  10. Output for Juno-60 PATCH SHIFT
  11. Output for Juno-60 ARPG
  12. DCB input / output

Possibilities of MDCB-2 ver. 2:

  • Receiving and transmitting MIDI channel selection in full range 1 to 16 or "Multichannel" mode for receiving.
  • The device operates in two directions, it converts MIDI commands Note On/Off from MIDI input to DCB data and transmit the data received from DCB interface to MIDI output simultaneously.
  • LED indicators of power-on state, edit mode and MIDI buses activity (selectable).
  • Large support of SysEx Messages for MIDI communication (parameter changes and saving, current status reading etc.).
  • Internal LFO with 90 selectable waveforms.
  • Possibility of synchronization LFO and Arpeggiator with MIDI clock.

Global system parameters programmable by user (can be set via MIDI Control Changes):

  • MIDI Msg Indicator (None / In / Out / Both)
  • MIDI Clock Indicator (Off / On)
  • Rx Multi-Channel (Off / On)
  • MIDI Out Mode (Off / Thru / DCB-Tx)
  • Auto-reset (Off / On)
  • Pgm Change Mode (None / Patch Shift / Preset Change / Both)

Device is powered by external supply adapter (recommended accessory - MW-1203GS, only for 230V mains).

Connection of MDCB-2 ver. 2:

FUNCTION ^^^^^

Signal from MIDI bus coming to input MIDI-IN is isolated by optocoupler and brought to CPU. CPU picks data for MDCB-2, converts these data according to parameters settings and final output data is sent to output connectors as the signals for Juno-60 control:

  • commands "Note On / Off - Note No." are converted to data for DCB input of Juno-60
  • commands "Note On - Velocity", "Key Aftertouch", "Channel Aftertouch", "Control Changes - Nr. 1" are converted (by DA converter) to control voltage (VC) for VCF CONTROL input of Juno-60
  • command "Control Changes - Nr. 64" is converted to gate-signal for PEDAL HOLD input of Juno-60
  • command "Program Change" is converted to trigger pulse for PATCH SHIFT input of Juno-60 or it changes MDCB-2 presets
  • command "MIDI Clock" is used to creating of clock pulses for ARPEGGO CLOCK input of Juno-60
In the opposite communication direction, data from input connector lines of DCB IN/OUT are processed by CPU and sent in MIDI format to output MIDI-OUT. MIDI-OUT output is at the same time being used for SysEx communication of MDCB-2 and host system.
